An extremely rare and unique set of two different variants of the Death cards for Wehrmacht Unteroffizier Franz Xaver Bierl, law student (stud. jur.) in civilian life. Franz Xaver Bierl served as an Unteroffizier in a Grenadier Regiment on the Eastern Front. He was severely wounded on 24 August 1943 during the fierce defensive fighting in Russia. Just over a week later, on 2 September 1943, he died of his injuries at the age of 24 in a Kriegslazarett (field hospital). According to the official records of the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge, Franz Xaver Bierl rests at the large German military cemetery in Sebej (Pskov region, Russia). This lot contains two different editions of exactly the same memorial card, printed by Buchdruckerei Fritz Hartmann-Sgruber, Bogen. This kind of variation is highly sought after because families often had a reprint made at the time: Variant 1 (Left): Image of Franz Xaver Bierl in his official Wehrmacht uniform including Schirmmütze (peaked cap) and glasses. Variant 2 (Right): Image of Franz Xaver Bierl in civilian clothing (suit with tie), presumably a photo from his time as a university student. Both cards are in excellent, crisp condition, with the characteristic Gothic lettering and the Iron Cross prominently displayed.
