Death card Josef Bachl, from Sand (Bavaria). In civilian life, he worked as a farmer's son. He served as Corporal in a Grenadier Regiment and died on 21 May 1944 after a severe wound in a field hospital in the region of Vitebsk (Belarus) at the age of almost 32. Josef took part in all campaigns of his unit and was a decorated soldier, holder of the Iron Cross 2nd Class (EK 2), the Assault Badge, and the Wound Badge in Silver. According to the official records of the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge, he was born on 22 June 1912 and his status as a war casualty is fully documented. Since his physical field grave was lost during the fierce fighting in the summer of 1944, his name is permanently recorded in the official memorial book of the central German military cemetery at Shatelo in Belarus.
