Beautiful Dutch sword tassel (portepee) from the second half of the 19th century (circa 1850–1890). This type of tassel was worn by Adjutant non-commissioned officers (and specific ranks of the Sergeant Major) within the Dutch armed forces (including the Infantry and Navy) to complete the sword (such as the Model 1852 or 1895). This example is in a very rare, untouched, and complete condition. Not a worn restoration project, but a piece that has stood the test of time. Specific details: The Stem: Beautifully and tightly wrapped with the original red silk thread. This delicate textile finish is completely intact, glossy, and shows no wear or fraying at all. The Crown: The silver-colored netting is tightly braided over the red stem, exactly as regulations require, and fits perfectly at the top into the original silver ring finish. The Cord: The black, round-braided cotton cord is sturdy and complete with the matching braided sliding loop. The Tassel & Core: Heavy fringe of metal wire with, at the heart, the distinctive deep orange silk fringe (the so-called "Orange Heart"), which 100% guarantees Dutch origin. Ideal for completing a plain weapon from this period in museum condition, or as a beautiful stand-alone piece for the serious collector of Dutch militaria!
