Death card of Wehrmacht corporal and unit record clerk Josef Wintermeier, bank clerk by profession, born in Schwarzach (Lower Bavaria). Josef served in the highly decorated elite unit Heeresflak Regiment "Großdeutschland" (part of the prestigious Division "Großdeutschland"). For his demonstrated commitment and bravery at the front, he was awarded the War Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords (KVK II mit Schwertern) and the Eastern Medal (Ostmedaille). He was killed in action (K.I.A.) on 19 February 1943 at the age of 24.5 during the fierce defensive fighting on the Eastern Front near Oposhnya (Poltava region, Ukraine). According to the official records of the German War Graves Commission, Josef Wintermeier rests at the German military cemetery in Kharkiv (Ukraine). His name is listed there in the central memorial register and commemorative book at the cemetery.
