A rare and complete copy of the well-known satirical book "Professor Knatschké: œuvres choisies du grand savant allemand et de sa fille Elsa", written and illustrated by the well-known pro-French Alsatian artist Hansi (Jean-Jacques Waltz). This copy is an extremely limited Édition de Luxe. According to the edition page, only 30 copies were printed worldwide on handmade Chinese paper (papier de Chine), of which only 20 entered the open market at the time. This copy is unnumbered and is most likely a hors commerce presentation copy from the immediate circle of the publisher or author. Printed in 1916 in Paris by H. Floury, Éditeur, in the middle of the First World War. At the time, the work served as a razor-sharp psychological propaganda weapon to mock the German intellectual and military apparatus in occupied Alsace. Condition:The fragile interior has in the past been expertly and professionally preserved in a sturdy half-cloth/full-cloth private binding (hardcover) in a burgundy color. The original illustrated paper wrapper has been perfectly preserved and mounted on the cover. The pages have not been trimmed tightly, so the original rough paper edges of the thin papier de Chine have been preserved. Very neat, solid condition without loose pages.
