Johannes served as a young infantryman on the Eastern Front. He fell on 27 April 1942 at the age of 19 in the bloody fighting near Rzhev (Russia), together with his comrade Paul Zenzes, who served in the same unit. According to the official database of the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge, Johannes Schmitz is registered as a fallen soldier. His grave is located in the Bacharevo region (25 km southwest of Rzhev).
